BIZ'S BEAT OF THE DAY.

Bored and need to learn a new skill? Let uncle Biz give you a lesson courtesy of Yo Gabba Gabba.

Yeah, we know we posted about Yo Gabba Gabba already, but we're still transfixed by the greatest kids show since Pee Wee's Playhouse (anyone who mentions Teletubbies gets a beatdown).

2 MANY DJ'S.

Normally we're not big on covering DJ sets - we're the kind of boring nerds who'd rather be chilling at home watching the latest pirated episodes of Heroes. Imported DJ's sleepwalking through their by-the-numbers playlists? Makes time go slower than Hiro Nakamura... but daaaamn, 2 MANY DJ'S (aka Soulwax) blew us away this weekend with an amazing set that had the crowd at Zouk going wild and even got our lazy arses doing a few dodgy dance moves - and anyone who knows us knows it takes some serious beats (and a fair number of G&T's) to get us doing the electric slide in public.

The Belgian brothers as famous for their remixes as their own tracks, did what they do best and tracks were mashed up, broken up, and dropped thick and fast, sometimes only appearing for a matter of seconds before disappearing, with cheers greeting many of the classics... Playlist somehow managed to include Guns n' Roses, Blur, Justice vs. Simian, Electric Light Orchestra, Vanessa Paradis, Nirvana, The Killers and of course Soulwax and various club classics amongst the zillions of other tracks speeding by. Pure genius.

Major thanks to Lynn for sorting us out with the VIP treatment at the door...

If you've never checked anything by these guys, start by getting your hands on their classic 'As Heard on Radio Soulwax vol. 2' album, or remix of the Gorillaz 'Dare'.

BEASTIE BOYS COLD KICKIN' IT LIVE.

The final stop of the GOOD VIBRATIONS festival was at Fort Canning in Singapore last Monday, and sporadic rain, missing acts, sound problems and drunken stage rushers couldn't stop the Beastie Boys from bringing down the house... Officially starting at 4pm, most of the crowd didn't start turning up until around 7.30, just in time to catch Agrikulture (DJ's Anton & Hogi's band) and headline acts Cut Copy, Jurassic 5 and Beastie Boys on the main stage, and Ursula 1000 on the secondary DJ stage. Everyone seeemed to be there for this one, including the guys from Surrender, SBTG, Killer Gerbil, and Indo friends all over...

Agrikulture

Cut Copy

Jurassic 5 (with great visuals)

Although missing some of the energy of seeing these bands in other venues (or countries...), as the evening wore on, and the alcohol sank in, the crowd definitely began to get into the swing of things, boosted by a slick performance by Jurassic 5, before getting crazy when the Beastie Boys finally came on at 12.15pm.

don't they cut off your arms for doing this in Singapore?

Their set included faves from across their back catalogue including Brass Monkey, No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn, Bodymovin', Intergalactic, Sabotage and an incredible mixing solo by Mixmaster Mike... Even after a couple of decades, they've STILL got it...

HIGHS: bumping into friends from singapore and jakarta at every turn. mixmaster mike's turntable session. jurassic 5 doing concrete schoolyard. security vs. the stage climber.

LOWS: bumping into friends from singapore and jakarta at every turn. never-ending lines for the bar. rain. missing expletives (f**king sanitized lyrics!). more rain. no VIP section/bar (yeah, we're pampered wimps). sleep-inducing after-party.

Overall congrats are in order to Donovan, Chris and the rest for doing a great job in bringing the festival to Singapore...

BOND BEGINS.

If you're looking for silhouettes of naked women flying in all directions (who isn't?), and super-retro graphics, you gotta check all the recent uploads of old Bond movie intros on Youtube.

Managing to be kitsch and stylish at the same time, on occasion the best part of the movie, and more often than not backed by classic songs... Nobody does it better.

Haven't seen the new 'improved' Bond yet, but if it's missing the traditional credit sequence it's getting an automatic two thumbs down.

{via CITY OF FILMS}

UPDATE: Saw Casino Royale. 7/10 for the movie. 2/10 for the intro. No naked silhouettes, animation looked like something made with Flash, and again, no naked silhouettes...

BRIT'S SINGLE. AND OBVIOUSLY AVAILABLE.

flava says "show 'em whatcha got"

Normally we're too sophisticated (ha, right...) to sink to the level of tabloid journalism, but not much else to report today... Seems Britney wants everyone to know she's back on the market. And gets regular waxing. And had a caesarian. And needs to work out.

You know you've sunk pretty low when Paris Hilton is trying to stop you from showing too much skin... and K-Fed starts to look like the better choice for custody of the kids.

For those with strong stomachs, the uncensored shots are at THE SUPERFICIAL.

JUSTICE VS. SIMIAN VS. KANYE.

Kanye asking if 707 has any more Surface2Air tees...

Not only did JUSTICE vs. Simian unexpectedly win 'best video' at the European MTV music awards, they also picked up the trophy in style with one of them in a Surface 2 Air t-shirt, and even better, pissed off Kanye West enough to get him to bum-rush the stage... Mildly ironic considering that their award was for their track 'We are your friends'.

Great quote from Kanye when he was on stage; "F**k this! My video cost a million dollars. Pamela Anderson was in it, I was jumping across canyons and s**t! If I don't win, the awards show loses credibility."

Brilliant. We've met six year-olds with better reasoning skills.

PS3 IS HERE.

The just-released and sold-out PS3 is already available in Jakarta! For the low,low price of... 13million rupes (US$1400 in real money). The list price is about US$600. No idea how much games are, but this is already the 6th unit this store has brought in (and it's already on hold). We're in the wrong business.

The same store also has chipped Xbox 360's with games for US$3.50, and sells Nintendo DS games on memory cards for a buck a pop... When it comes to black market importing or piracy, it's good to see that Indonesia is still number one.

UPDATE:
Maybe an US$800 premium isn't such a bad deal, considering the chances of getting shot, carjacked and more...We'll stick to the Nintendo Wii.

Great video on YOUTUBE of a guy buying one then smashing it to pieces in front of the desperate people waiting in line.

WAITING FOR A WII. OR PS3.

Our plan was to ask a friend in the US to pick up one of the new games consoles for us this holiday season. Somehow don't think we'll be getting it.

The top photo is gamers in Alaska lining up for 24 hours in way-below-zero weather for a ticket enabling them to buy a Nintendo Wii when it's released this month. The bottom photo is gamers lining up NINE days before the release of the PS3...

We thought we were into video gaming, but this is getting ridiculous.

SCORSESE RETURNS.

One of our heroes, Martin Scorsese, released his latest movie THE DEPARTED in the States this weekend. Based on the Hong Kong thriller 'Infernal Affairs', it stars Leo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg, and has been getting some of his best reviews in ages...

Thanks to local movie junkie and director (grad of St. Martins, no less!), Holygoof, we've got a review of an early sneak preview - read on...
I must admit I am a big fan of Marty Scorsese and would go see a home video of him picking his nose and cheer all the way through. Going into the cineplex I prayed I'd be seeing "Goodfellas" Scorsese rather than “Aviator” Scorsese. Luckily it wasn't the latter. Cramming all three versions of Hongkong’s Infernal Affairs trilogy in one flick Scorsese shows studio young guns (or posers) how proper filmmaking is done. Hollywood-addressed Boston Southies like Damon and Wahlberg are called in to help authenticate Irish gang life including the wack Boston accent. The film's full of witty one-liners and strong acting by almost all of the actors. The camera movements complete the package - Scorsese indulges the audience with his camera razzmatazz and for one or two moments there I think he is showing off. Kids, yes you too Joko, if you have movie making aspirations go see this one and take notes! Great to see the grand old master delivering gold again, frame after frame. What else, oh, I’m also a fan of the original Hongkong version but that was what I call ‘surface’ film making. Nothing compared to the layers and layers Marty puts into his work. I will go into a fistfight with anyone who says the original version is better!
Sounds worth blowing the extra bucks to watch this in the 21 luxury room. As for the review, that's quality writing, and I'll go into a fistfight with anyone... etc...

{thanks to Holygoof}
